Anime Review Of The Week: Fate/zero

By : otakukenyan

Story [10/10]: Extremely tight story setting. Perfectly crafted and a perfect blend of action, fantasy, supernatural and historical genres. Set 10 years before the Holy Grail War shown in Fate/Stay Night (the sequel), this is not just any prequel. It is THE prequel that any Fate franchise lover must watch. Newcomers to the franchise will also enjoy the thrill probably to the max since the story in this installment is self-introductory.

***For newbies to this franchise******
The franchise chronicles a kind of War between 7 magus (Magicians)- the Masters and their Servants, who are Heroic Spirits from different eras. The duels between the participants of the War are fought to the death and the last standing Master and his/her Servant are entitled the possession of the Holy Grail- a powerful Magical device that can grant any wish, though only one. Fate Zero as well as Fate Stay Night chronicle the events of the Holy Grail Wars taking place in different decades.
*******
Okay since I have watched the sequel, I definitely made some comparisons in the two stories. And the only conclusion I have come up with till now- Fate Zero is extremely focused on the Holy Grail War. Apart from a filler episode all the other episodes focus on the strategies meticulously being executed by each of the Masters along with their Servants. Somehow Fate Stay Night lacked this kind of focus. The strategies of the Masters are complex, the Servants are all very powerful. (Its really not too predictable who the last standing two dueling parties will be). They are honorable knights fighting for the Grail but at the same time also maintaining their pride and dignity. I think it is this fact that has really built up a mood of awesomeness visually in all these episodes.

Animation and Art [10/10]: There are a lot of dark scenes in terms of visuals, many shown in the night time or late evenings. Many dark scenes also implied in these settings especially while showing Ryunosuke and his Servant (they are way to grose –so thank heavens they are not explicitly shown in the anime- thank you censorship @_@). The art in terms of the landscapes and city backgrounds is very well made. Characters drawn are fine as well. Animation is top class. All the moves in the fights shown in this season were very clear which added to the thrill of watching them.

Sound [10/10]: OP and ED are real groovy and their words fit the theme of the series perfectly. The background score for the series is by Kajiura Yuki, so expect some Piano and Violin as well but in a very un-shoujo genre manner of course. Kajiura Yuki always sets a musical theme song of every character, it is also the case for this series. Iskander and Gilgamesh have been given themes where some middle eastern or eastern instruments have been used. An extremely strong point of this series is the Voice Actors. Each one of them has breath life into each character. The arrogance in Gilgamesh, the pride of Iskander, Saber, all the voice actors have done an excellent job which help in building up the character of each of the Servants as well as the Masters. The dialogues have been meticulously written. Many philosophical, many filled with pride of the knights. They are just perfect- and personally were a treat to read (in the subtitles). They actually made me think about certain things said in the episodes (watch especially ep 11 for a very interesting conversation between Saber and Iskander)

Characters [10/10]: Okay if you have not got bored and read till this section of my review you might already have gotten a good idea that all the characters are super awesome and cool. I may not be able to put all of my thoughts in good words but to tell the truth I was awestruck seeing all the Servants in Fate Zero. There’s nothing like the abilities of each Servant rises during the course of the show. They are all invincible to begin with. Just the thought of having Heroes from different eras fight on the same battle ground was an awesome and thrilling concept to begin with. The developments in Fate Zero exactly highlight this aspect beautifully (the Servants themselves have dialogues were they acknowledge having been able to fight with a Heroic figure of another era) The Masters are just as manipulative, brutal and come up with complex strategies. The personalities of the cast of Masters and Servants set out for Fate Zero are just perfect and have added hugely for making Fate Zero so good to watch. Personally I was overwhelmed by Iskander’s strength and his thoughts.

Enjoyment and Overall [10/10]: Really no complaints on any aspect of the show. Extremely well planned and executed story. Very interesting plot, perfect for an action thriller. Strong character cast whose actions are enjoyable to watch. Awesome dialogues and strategies shown in the series. Completely recommended.

How to Become an Ultimate Anime Fan

By : otakukenyan
Are you interested in anime, but envy people who are really into it? This article will help you be a better anime fan.

STEPS
Decide which kind of anime you want to watch based on general type, demographic or themes.

Start by researching. If you don't have a favorite anime series or movie, find out what that is first and then surf the web for fan-sites so you can learn more about it and find out about similar anime. Go a little further in your research than just the plot or characters. If it's a historical anime, research the period in history. Find out what style it's in as well (Wikipedia has a good article which breaks down the different anime genres).

Consider buying some.Consider buying some. After you have an idea of the anime you like, start investing some serious time into it...and cash. Most rental stores have an okay selection of anime now, and often Adult Swim has a decent anime lineup, but you'll probably have to buy most of what you watch (or, if you're lucky, you can borrow from or trade with friends). Price shop as much as possible, and go for box sets whenever you can. Don't forget about graphic novels!

Cover your room with anime posters and toys. Get posters from a local comic shop or online.

Subscribe to or buy magazines like Anime Insider and Newtype. They show Anime in Japan and what will be hot in the U.S. Knowing more about upcoming anime makes you a more well-informed fan.

Watch with subtitles. Learning to watch anime in Japanese with subtitles is essential.

Stop downloading once licensed. There are many great scanslation sites out there to get anime and manga that's only available in Japan in English! It is important to support your favorite mangaka (Manga artist) and type of fandom. Be sure to stop downloading from these sites once the anime is licensed. See tips below.

Buy accessories including includes t-shirts, plushes, keychains, stickers, model kits, soundtracks and even weapons (such as Kenshin's reverse blade sword). Even more time and money goes into this stage. Don't forget music and graphics for your computer.

Develop your own anime persona. There are plenty of online quizzes which can let you know which anime character you are - so find out! You may even find an RPG to help you live your fantasy out with. Most characters have a signature technique or phrase, so try thinking up one of your own and sprinkle it into conversations or battles.

Start a fan site. This is where you can write plot summaries, put up pictures of your collectibles (and yourself in costume if you wish)and start message boards. Choose your clever domain name before it's gone!

Start drawing Anime! It's always good to know how to draw it too!

TIPS
Downloading fan-subbed episodes is just as illegal before licensing as it is afterwards. Japanese companies have started to crack down on illegal fan-subbers. *Consider: Being the ultimate fan is way more than watching whatever Adult Swim is playing. Try watching many different anime to find a genre that's best suited for you. There are many different types, so there's a guarantee you'll find one you'll like.

While it can be financially risky and on questionable legal ground, a lot of anime can be found in the form of bootlegged DVD sets on eBay and websites like Sphiatt.com. Check legitimacy against other buyers before giving out your credit card information.
Sites like : www.animenewsnetwork.com ; axiumanime.ucoz.com ; www.theotaku.com ; www.theanimenetwork.com ; www.funimation.com - are the places you can socialize with other anime fans . Also when chatting , try asking the person what anime would he think you should watch (after telling them what anime you like). It helps !

If you have Comcast, go to the Funimation channel On Demand. It is under the Cutting Edge section. There is a ton of new hot Anime titles including School Rumble, Monster, Strike Witches, and more!

Warnings
Do not invest life funds in anime. If you are young you may find yourself getting bored with anime after a while.

If your favorite genre turns out to be Hentai, Yaoi, or Yuri, proceed with steps 3-5 at your own peril. These can be considered "Adult Anime".

Most people will look at you oddly if you're overly enthusiastic about anime in inappropriate contexts. Suppress your power level.

Many people unconditionally believe that all anime are stupid. If you are an anime fan, they will, by extension, think you're stupid. Be ready for that.

Don't overdo it when you don't need to. For example, don't reference an anime event or character when you answer a question the teacher asks at school. As an example, don't write something on an assignment like, "George Washington was determined to win the war against the British, just like Naruto won't stop on the road to Hokage."

Anime is sometimes considered a subset of geekdom. Be prepared to hear the words geek and nerd used to describe you in a non complimentary way. Remember that this doesn't change who you are - you can still be a football quarterback and be "into" anime.

How to Be an Otaku (Anime Geek)

By : otakukenyan
STEPS

Pick and watch some anime of your interest. Anime it not itself a genre; it has many, many genres that any person could appreciate. It's easier to start with some giant titles (One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Yu-Gi-Oh!, etc.), then once you know what like, you can get further into it.

Watch the anime! Most otaku look down on dubbed language watchers, and sometimes anime is better in the original Japanese (with subtitles), but if it's something you enjoy, you shouldn't let others' opinions rule you. (Especially if you're getting into anime!)

Don't subscribe to the hype Especially outside of Japan, anime is distorted by the fan base. A lot of the best anime aren't the most popular, as with most things, so pursue it yourself.

Talk to people like you. They are out there, I promise. Find forums and fan sites (Animevice.com, for example) where you can share your opinions, ask questions, read fan fiction, or see fan art.

Merchandise! Absolutely necessary for any otaku obsessor. It may be hard to find, but any given Sam's Goodies, Hot Topic, or Books-A-Million will have some stuff. Otherwise, finding the genuine Japanese stuff (usually the best) can be rather difficult. There are plenty of websites, though, so simply Google whichever anime whose junk you wish to purchase.

Anime conventions are like our Woodstock. They smell terribly bad, but they're so wonderfully worth it. Otaku-Con and others have schedules online in cities around the country where you can meet, interact, and cosplay.

If there is one, join your school's anime club. It can be so validating to know people in real life who share you interest, but such things are rare. If you know people like this, all the better.

Fan out! Otakus notoriously tend to be a little. . . crazy. If you're as into anime as you think you are, you're probably already writing stories for your favorite characters, drawing them, and learning the dances and lyrics for the intro, but if you're not, you're not doing it right.

Make an AMV! If you like an anime you can make an anime music video out of it and upload it to youtube. Its a great way to meet some otaku friends online and to share you favorite anime with other people. There are also amv contests you can enter online as well as at conventions.

Remember to sleep! And eat, and shower, you crazy obsessor, you.

Cosplay as your favorite anime characters! It's the farthest you can go, dressing up as your characters. Unless, of course, you want to glomp Vic Mignogna.

Tips

It's a good idea to buy some merchandise from the anime you like. Check out online stores, as they often have some great items for not-too-high prices.

Try to take suggestions from people, even different genres. You never know what you'll like.

Watch online. Once you find your first anime, you can type in "(insert anime here) episode 1", and so on episodes, at these few sites: Veoh.com or Youtube.com.

Try subscribing to a manga/anime magazine like Shojo Beat. Shojo Beat also has stuff about Japan's latest trends.

There are many online manga places, but I would suggest that you try and support the anime community by buying the manga or even better attending some of the conventions

Warnings

If your friends aren't into manga and anime, then don't go on and on about it. You may love it, but that doesn't mean you have to inflict it on others who don't share your interests, you may turn them away.

Check out the page "Not be a rabid Otaku". Not everyone wants to hear about it.

Be noted, otakus are usually treated as freaks in Japan and that it is not "cool" or "awesome" to be one. Keep your power levels in check. Same goes for North America; don't expect to get chicks or invited to parties because of your intimate Naruto knowledge.

Do not start acting like a snob. People don't like fans who are biased and only talk about the anime they like, it can be really annoying.

Be careful in the anime community, yes there is a community of anime fans, some are great, some are interesting, but at times, you will run across the snobs, don't let the deter you from being a fan.

Don't and I mean this, DO NOT nerd out over ONE series, give all series a chance!
